There is no such thing as a good dog, or a bad dog. Only the right dog.

  • Some dogs are just easier than others: They respond to training better, have easier going personalities and won’t make you pay for any inconsistencies or mistakes that you might make along the way.
  • The best dog breeds for first time owners are those that will take your lack of experience into account. This is unlikely to be the case with a breed that is known to be particularly wilful, naturally assertive or overly sensitive.

The important thing to remember about dog breeds is that their personalities manifest themselves within clearly defined behavioral ranges.

This does not mean that all dogs within a breed behave in exactly the same way, all dogs are individuals. It just means that within any given breed, you have a good general understanding of how that dog is most likely to behave in any given situation. For these reasons:

I have yet to see a ferociously territorial Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that would take on all comers, or a Tibetan Mastiff that ran and hid when the doorbell rang

Popular, does not necessarily translate into the best dog breeds for first time owners

  • Don’t fall into the trap that just because a breed is popular, then it is necessarily a good first dog for the inexperienced owner.
  • Please consider the first and most important question any responsible dog owner should ask- Do you really truely want a dog?
  • Assuming you really do want a dog take some time to think about the needs of your ideal dog. The more your chosen poochy pal can fit seamlessly into your own lifestyle the better.

Having said all that, just because you don’t see the dog breed that you have your heart set on here on this list, it doesn’t mean that they are not suitable for the newbie owner.
