The Most Popular Dog Breeds 1900-1991

The most popular breeds of the past have been very different to those we prefer today. According to AKC statistics, between 1905-55 The Boston Terrier was consistently in the top two spots. American Cocker Spaniels took over as The USA’s overall favourite between 1936-52, before being usurped by the Beagle.

The Beagle remained top dog until it was ousted in 1959 by the Poodle which stayed on the top spot for over 20 years. By 1982 the American Cocker Spaniel had regained its crown and reigned supreme as America’s most popular dog breed until 1991. Since 1991 Labrador Retrievers have been the undisputed number one breed by a country mile. New Labrador registrations far outweigh any other dog breeds.

The Influence Of Media And Popular Culture

Popular culture also plays its part when it comes to influencing the popularity of certain breeds:

  • The film career of Rin-Tin-Tin saw such a rise in the number of German Shepherd registrations in the USA that in 1925 the breed replaced the Boston Terrier as the America’s most popular breed.
  • There was a perceptible surge of popularity for Dalmatians coinciding with Walt Disney’s Film 101 Dalmatians.
  • Don’t forget either the eternal appeal of the Collie made famous by the film ‘Lassie Come Home’.

Always look to get your new dog from a reputable dog breeder. Bad breeders or puppy mill owners often take advantage of a breed’s passing popularity in order to make a quick profit at the detriment of their dog’s welfare.
